Chamomile, Mugwort and Friends: Calming Plant Ingredients

Chamomile, Mugwort and Friends: Calming Plant Ingredients

1 min read

Sometimes skin doesn't need another active. It needs something kind. That's what calming botanicals are for.

What are calming botanicals?

Calming botanicals are plant extracts traditionally used to soothe skin. Chamomile (Kamille in German) is a classic. Mugwort (ssuk) is a Korean favourite. Artichoke, bamboo, aloe vera, witch hazel, rosemary, Jeju cypress, pine and lotus also appear in K-beauty for comfort.

What they do for your skin

  • Soothes. Skin feels calmer and less irritated.
  • Comforts dryness. Many botanicals hydrate as well.
  • Gentle care. Ideal when skin is over-exfoliated or stressed.

Who it suits

Sensitive, dry and stressed skin, and anyone giving their skin a break from strong actives.

How to use it

  1. Use a botanical cream or ampoule as your comfort step.
  2. Morning and night.
  3. Patch-test if you have plant allergies.

When you'll notice it: Skin feels calmer the same day.

Good to know: Chamomile is in the daisy family. If you react to daisies or ragweed, patch-test first.

What to pair it with

Botanicals pair well with panthenol, ceramides and cica.

Myth vs fact

Myth: Natural ingredients can't irritate.
Fact: Some people react to plants too. Patch-test new products, especially if you have allergies.

How to choose one

  • Look for Chamomilla Recutita (chamomile), Bisabolol, Artemisia (mugwort), Cynara Scolymus (artichoke), Aloe Barbadensis or Hamamelis (witch hazel).
  • Fragrance-free is best for very sensitive skin.
  • Choose the format by need: hand cream, toner or face cream.

Where to find it

Kamill's hand creams are built on organic chamomile, and Baegayul's cream calms with a honeysuckle herbal complex. From the big names, AXIS-Y's Artichoke ampoule and Purito's Mighty Bamboo cream are gentle barrier favourites.
