Retinol, Retinal and Bakuchiol: A Beginner's Guide
2 min readShare
Retinol has a reputation for being both brilliant and a bit scary. Start it the right way and you'll get the smooth skin without the flaky phase.
What is retinol?
Retinoids are a family of vitamin A ingredients. Retinol is the best-known. Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one step closer to the form skin uses, so it tends to work faster at lower amounts. Bakuchiol is a plant extract often called a gentle retinol alternative because it's easier on sensitive skin.
What it does for your skin
- Smoother texture. Skin looks smoother and more refined over time.
- Softens the look of fine lines. Regular use helps fine lines look less noticeable.
- Brighter, more even look. Skin tone looks more even as texture improves.
Who it suits
Anyone wanting smoother texture or noticing fine lines. Sensitive skin may prefer bakuchiol, or a low-strength retinol with a soothing base.

How to use it
- Start two or three nights a week, then build up.
- Apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin at night.
- Always wear sunscreen the next morning.
When you'll notice it: Texture often looks smoother after about four weeks. Fine lines take around twelve weeks.
Good to know: Avoid retinoids if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and check with your doctor before using any active. Some dryness in the first weeks is common. Slow down if it stings.
What to pair it with
Pair with ceramides, panthenol or PDRN to keep skin comfortable. Use acids on different nights while your skin adjusts.
Myth vs fact
Myth: If it doesn't sting, it isn't working.
Fact: Stinging and peeling are signs to slow down, not proof that it's working.
How to choose one
- Look for Retinol, Retinal (Retinaldehyde), Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate or Bakuchiol.
- Beginners do best with a low strength or an encapsulated (liposomal) form, then build up.
- Choose opaque or airless packaging. Retinoids break down in light and air.
