Honeysuckle, Sam-Hwang and Mugwort: Korea's Hanbang Herbs
2 min readShare
Skin that flushes the moment it gets hot or stressed is exactly what Korea's herbal skincare, hanbang, has been calming for centuries.
What are korean herbs?
Hanbang (한방) is Korea's traditional herbal approach, and many Korean skincare brands build blends from it. Honeysuckle flower (Lonicera japonica, 금은화) is a classic cooling herb. Sam-Hwang (삼황) means 'three yellows': Scutellaria baicalensis root, Coptis japonica root and Phellodendron amurense bark. Mugwort (ssuk, 쑥), especially from Ganghwa Island, is Korea's favourite calming plant. Plum and apricot blossom and lotus add a soft, fresh feel. Many brands combine 10 to 30 herbs into a single 'herbal complex'.
What they do for your skin
- Calms the look of flushing. Herbal blends help heated, red-looking skin feel cooler and calmer.
- Balances oil and moisture. Skin feels less shiny and less tight at the same time.
- Comfort for sensitive skin. Gentle blends suit skin that reacts easily.
Who it suits
Sensitive, redness-prone and heat-flushed skin, dehydrated-oily skin, and anyone curious about Korean herbal skincare.

How to use it
- Use a herbal toner or sheet mask after cleansing.
- Follow with a herbal cream or gel to keep the calm going.
- On hot days, keep your sheet masks in the fridge.
When you'll notice it: Skin often feels cooler and calmer the same day. Balance improves over a few weeks.
Good to know: Plants can cause reactions in some people. Patch-test first if you have plant allergies.
What to pair it with
Herbal complexes pair well with panthenol, ginseng, licorice and propolis, all regulars in Korean hanbang formulas.
Myth vs fact
Myth: Herbal skincare is heavy and smells like a herbal medicine shop.
Fact: Modern hanbang formulas are often light water-gels, and many are fragrance-free.
How to choose one
- Look for Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root, Coptis Japonica Root, Phellodendron Amurense Bark or Artemisia (mugwort).
- 'Herbal complex' usually means a blend. The brand will often say how many herbs it contains.
- Fragrance-free is the safer choice for sensitive skin.
Where to find it
Baegayul builds its range on hanbang: the Moisture Balancing Cream calms heat-flushed skin with honeysuckle and a Sam-Hwang herbal complex, and the sheet mask carries a 26-herb complex with propolis. From the big names, Beauty of Joseon's Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel uses 19% plum blossom water with heartleaf and lotus.
