Job's Tears (Yulmu): The Korean Grain Behind Baegayul's Balance

Job's Tears (Yulmu): The Korean Grain Behind Baegayul's Balance

2 min read

Oily on top, tight underneath, and a bit dull all over? Korea has been reaching for one humble grain for that feeling for generations.

What are job's tears?

Job's tears is the seed of a tall Asian grass (Coix lacryma-jobi). In Korea it's called yulmu (율무), a familiar grain in teas and porridge as well as in hanbang, Korea's traditional herbal care. In Japan it's known as hatomugi, the star of some of the country's best-known skin lotions. On labels look for Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-yuen Seed Extract.

What they do for your skin

  • Balances oil and moisture. It helps skin that feels oily and tight at the same time feel more even.
  • Clearer, brighter look. Dull skin looks fresher and more even with regular use.
  • Smooth, soft feel. Rough patches feel softer and more refined.

Who it suits

Dull, dehydrated-oily and combination skin, and sensitive skin that wants gentle, everyday care.

How to use it

  1. Use a Job's tears toner after cleansing, morning and night.
  2. On tight days, soak cotton pads and leave them on dry areas for a few minutes.
  3. Follow with your usual serum and moisturiser.

When you'll notice it: Skin feels more balanced within a week or two. A brighter look builds over four to six weeks.

Good to know: Gentle for most skin. If you have a grain allergy, patch-test first.

What to pair it with

Job's tears pairs well with hyaluronic acid, PHA and other gentle hanbang botanicals.

Myth vs fact

Myth: Grains belong in the kitchen, not in skincare.
Fact: Job's tears has been part of Asian beauty for generations, and modern extracts make it light and easy to layer.

How to choose one

  • Look for Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-yuen Seed Extract, or 'Job's tears', 'yulmu' or 'hatomugi' on the pack.
  • Toners are the classic format, because you can sweep, soak or use them as a quick mask.
  • Fragrance-free formulas suit sensitive skin best.

Where to find it

Job's tears is Baegayul's signature ingredient. Its Moisture Balancing Toner uses a Super Job's tears complex with gentle PHA and Goheung yuzu, and the matching serum pairs a Job's tears complex with multi-molecular hyaluronic acid.
