Niacinamide: What It Does for Your Skin (and How to Pick One)
3 min readShare
Oily by lunch, a few leftover marks, pores you can see from across the room. If that sounds familiar, niacinamide is probably the ingredient you've been looking for.
It turns up in serums, toners, creams and sheet masks, and for good reason. Niacinamide is one of the few ingredients that quietly helps with several things at once, and most skin types get along with it.
What is niacinamide?
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3. It's water-based, light and easy to layer, which is why Korean brands love putting it in everything from a first-step toner to a night cream. On a label you'll see it written simply as "Niacinamide".
What it does for your skin
- Evens out the look of tone. It helps fade the look of dull patches and leftover marks over time, so skin looks more even and brighter.
- Refines the look of pores. With regular use, skin looks smoother and pores look less obvious.
- Supports the skin barrier. It helps skin hold on to moisture and feel more comfortable, especially when the air is dry or the aircon is on all day.
The catch: it works steadily, not overnight. Give it four to eight weeks of daily use before you judge it.
Who it suits
Almost everyone, but it really shines on oily, combination and uneven-looking skin. Not sure where your skin sits? The Skin MBTI quiz tells you in three minutes.
Skin MBTI match: O (oily) · P (tone care).
How to use it
- Morning or night. Niacinamide is happy at either time, so use it whenever it fits your routine.
- Start around 2 to 5%. That's the range most serums use. Higher isn't always better, and some people find very high strengths tingly.
- Apply after toner, before cream. Then finish with sunscreen in the morning.
When you'll notice it: Skin feels more comfortable within days. Tone and pores look better after four to eight weeks.
Good to know: Very high strengths (10% and above) can make some skin tingle or flush. If that happens, switch to a lower strength. Skincare niacinamide is made in the lab, not from animals.
What to pair it with (and what not to worry about)
It plays well with hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides. You may have read that niacinamide and vitamin C cancel each other out. That idea comes from old lab tests under conditions your bathroom shelf will never see. Most people use them together without problems. If your skin is sensitive, use one in the morning and one at night.
Myth vs fact
Myth: More niacinamide means faster results.
Fact: Consistency matters more than strength. A comfortable 2 to 5% used every day beats a stronger formula you only use when your skin feels up to it.
How to pick a niacinamide product
Look at where niacinamide sits in the ingredient list. When it's near the top, or the brand gives a percentage, it's doing the main job. When it's further down, it's there as a supporting player. Both are useful, just in different steps. Here are our picks: KIWIGLOW puts 5% niacinamide front and centre, while SÉLEVÉ uses it as a supporting player alongside green caviar PDRN. From the big names, AXIS-Y (5%) and Biodance are two worldwide favourites.

Yes. Many people find niacinamide makes a retinol routine feel more comfortable.
How long until I see a difference?
Give it four to eight weeks of daily use. Tone and texture change gradually.

Korean corner: 맑음 (mal-geum) means "clear", like the sky after rain, or skin on a good day.
