Vitamin C: The Brightening Classic, Done Gently
2 min readShare
Dull, tired-looking skin after a long week? Vitamin C is the classic way to bring the brightness back.
What is vitamin C?
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is the most researched form but can be unstable and tingly. Derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside or sodium ascorbyl phosphate are gentler and more stable. Vitamin E is a classic partner antioxidant. Fruit extracts like yuja, tangerine and sea buckthorn add natural vitamin C too.
What it does for your skin
- Brighter-looking skin. It helps dull skin look fresher and more radiant.
- Evens out the look of tone. Over time, dark spots and patches look less noticeable.
- Antioxidant support. It helps skin cope with daily environmental stress.
Who it suits
Dull or uneven-looking skin. Sensitive skin should start with a vitamin C derivative or a low-strength formula.

How to use it
- Use in the morning, after cleansing and before moisturiser.
- Finish with sunscreen every morning.
- Store it away from heat and light, and close the cap tightly.
When you'll notice it: Skin looks brighter within a few weeks. Dark spots take two to three months.
Good to know: Pure vitamin C can tingle at first. If it does, use it every other day until your skin adjusts.
What to pair it with
Vitamin C works well with vitamin E, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. If your skin is sensitive, keep it and strong acids at different times of day.
Myth vs fact
Myth: Vitamin C can't be used with niacinamide.
Fact: That idea comes from old lab conditions. Most people use them together without problems.
How to choose one
- Pure vitamin C is listed as Ascorbic Acid. Gentler forms include Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid.
- First time, or sensitive skin? Start with a gentler form or a lower strength.
- Choose opaque or airless packs and use it up within a few months of opening.
Where to find it
From the big names, Purito's serum uses 5% pure vitamin C, and Medicube's capsule cream wraps vitamin C in a sea buckthorn base. goodal's green tangerine toner and KAINE's Vita Drop serum bring a gentler, fruit-based take.

FAQ
Morning or night?
Morning is popular because it pairs well with sunscreen, but night works too.
My vitamin C turned orange. Is it okay?
Pure vitamin C darkens as it oxidises. A deep orange or brown colour means it's time for a new bottle.
Is vitamin C safe for sensitive skin?
Start with a derivative or a low strength and use it every other day at first.
